The Eszterházy Palace in Fertőd

A gem of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo architecture, the Eszterházy Palace awaits visitors along the marshlands of Lake Neusiedl. The construction and heyday of the palace and its nearly 200-hectare park are associated with "Pomp-loving" Prince Miklós Eszterházy, who between 1762 and 1790 oversaw continual efforts to build a residence comparable only to the royal courts of Europe. Not only the upper nobility of the era visited Eszterháza, but the Queen of Hungary and Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa, herself, stayed there as a visitor as well. The palace, which in 2004 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Cultural Landscape of Lake Neusiedl, currently houses a museum and a hotel. Visitors may participate in a traditional palace stroll, take the Grand Palace Tour or the Discoverers’ Way, exploring the mansion’s secret corners as well as spaces that are currently under study and renovation, such as Prince Miklós’s second-floor private suite, the Puppet Theatre, the palace attic, the Belvedere (observation tower) as well as the buildings and botanical sights located in the huge English garden. Music lovers can take advantage of the variety of musical events that take place at the palace each summer.
